This Urtext edition by leading French music scholar Roy Howat contains a preface, commentary and exemplary presentation of the score. Includes piano accompaniment and separate cello part.

      Faure komponierte die Eligie fiir Violoncello und Klavier 1880, moglicherweise als Teil einer Sonate die nie fertig-gestellt wurde.1 Die erste offentliche Auffiihrung fand am 15. Dezember 1883 in einem Konzert der Societe nationale de musique in Paris statt; die Ausfiihrenden waren der Widmungstrager Jules Loeb und der Komponist. Der Erfolg war so groB, daB Faure das Stiick 1895 auf Wunsch des Dirigenten Edouard Colonne orchestrierte.2 Diese Fassung wurde erstmals am 26. April 1901 in Paris an der Societe nationale de musique mit Pablo Casals als Solisten und unter Leitung des Komponisten aufgefiihrt.
